Rufous-fronted Prinia

Overview

The rufous-fronted prinia is a small, stocky insectivorous bird belonging to the family Cisticolidae. It is found primarily in India and Pakistan, where it inhabits subtropical or tropical dry forests and other sparse vegetation areas.

Identification

• Size and build: Small and stocky, generally measuring 12 cm in length with a weight between 5 and 6 grams.
• Plumage: Upper parts and wings are sandy in color, while the lower parts are off-white; the head is olive brown with a pale eyebrow.
• Features: Has pink legs and toes, reddish-orange eyes with a thin red eye circle, and a thin, slightly curved beak.
• Vocalisation: Emits a repetitive song from an exposed perch, often accompanied by wagging its tail.

Habitat

Found in India and Pakistan, the species inhabits subtropical or tropical dry forests, as well as rocky areas, artificial land, and dry open plains or hills with sparse vegetation. It is mainly a resident species, though limited local migration occurs during cold weather.

Diet

An insectivorous bird that feeds within the foliage or on the ground. It exhibits discreet behavior and may allow itself to be approached while foraging.
