Overview

Retz's helmetshrike is a species of bird in the helmetshrike family Vangidae, formerly usually included in the Malaconotidae. It is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

The species is found in Angola, Botswana, the DRC, Eswatini, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Its natural habitats consist of subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical mangrove forests, and subtropical or tropical moist shrubland.

Four subspecies of the Retz's helmetshrike are recognised, with the nominal subspecies Prionops retzii retzii specifically located in the northern parts of southern Africa.
