Masked Shining Parrot

Overview

The masked shining parrot, also known as the masked parrot or yellow-breasted musk parrot, is a species of parrot in the family Psittaculidae. It is endemic to Viti Levu in Fiji and is currently listed as Near Threatened.

Identification

• Length of 47 cm and weight of 322 g.
• Bright green body with a black mask on the face.
• Yellow centre of the breast transitioning to orange towards the abdomen.
• Outer webs of the primary wing feathers are blue or purple, while tail feathers are green and washed with blue.

Habitat

This bird is endemic to Viti Levu in Fiji. Its natural habitats include subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests, mangrove forests, arable land, and rural gardens. The species faces threats primarily from habitat loss.
