Brown Accentor

Overview

The brown accentor (Prunella fulvescens) is a species of bird in the family Prunellidae. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to its extensive range and stable population trend.

Identification

• White supercilium that is broader behind the eye
• Blackish-brown mask and ear-coverts
• Yellowish breast and belly
• Males are larger than females

Habitat

Found across parts of Central and South Asia, including Afghanistan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Its natural habitat consists of Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation at altitudes between 3,300 and 5,100 meters, preferring drier environments than other accentors.

Diet

Adults feed on seeds, fruits, and insects, while nestlings have only been observed eating insects. Females perform the majority of the feeding duties for the young.
