Rusty Pitohui

Overview

The Pseudorectes ferrugineus is a medium-sized, rusty brown songbird endemic to the lowland and hill forests of New Guinea, the Aru Islands, and West Papuan islands. It is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List and is widespread and common throughout its habitat range.

Identification

• Approximately 28 cm long, making it the largest member of its family.
• Rusty brown plumage overall with a yellowish-buff underside.
• Possesses a strong black bill, with some subspecies in western New Guinea exhibiting a whitish bill.
• Features a pale iris and similar plumage in both sexes.

Habitat

This species is found throughout the lowlands and hill forests of New Guinea, the Aru Islands, and West Papuan islands. Its range includes various islands such as Waigeo, Batanta, Misool, Salawati, and Yapen, as well as the mainland.

The rusty pitohui is usually observed in small parties mixed with other gregarious species, and it constructs a deep, cup-shaped nest made of sticks, leaves, and stems placed in a tree fork.
