Black-eared Barbet

Overview

The black-eared barbet is a species of barbet native to Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo. It is listed as least concern on the IUCN Red List owing to its large geographical range.

Identification

• Olive-green plumage with a blue throat and nape.
• Features a black beak and a large black streak between the eyes.
• Distinctive red spots encircled by black are present below the eyes.
• Small in size, measuring 16–17 cm in length and weighing 26.3–37 g.

Habitat

This species inhabits shrubland and forest environments. It is found up to an altitude of 1,200 m (3,900 ft) within its range in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo.
