Green-eared Barbet

Overview

The green-eared barbet (Psilopogon faiostrictus) is an Asian barbet classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It is a resident breeder found across parts of mainland Southeast Asia and southern China.

Identification

• Length of 24.5–27 cm with a plump body, short neck, large head, and short tail.
• Plump bird featuring a white-streaked brown head and breast, green ear coverts, and a green-streaked yellow belly with otherwise green plumage.
• Distinguished from the lineated barbet by its smaller size, distinctive green ear patch, darker bill, and dark eye-ring rather than a yellow one.

Habitat

Found in southern China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, inhabiting broadleaf evergreen and mixed or open woodlands at elevations up to 900 m.
