Red-vented Barbet

Overview

The red-vented barbet (Psilopogon lagrandieri) is an Asian barbet found in Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. It currently holds a Least Concern status on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Plumage is green to bronze-coloured, with a head that is brown and features greyish patches on the throat and sides.
• A blue line runs above the eyes, and a red patch is located below the tail.
• Length ranges from 29–34 cm (11–13 in).

Habitat

This species is native to Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, where it occupies subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests as well as subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Diet

Observations in the Lac Boc Forest of Việt Nam indicate a diet comprising fruits such as Ficus sp., Litsea cubeba, Campylospermum serratum, Cinnamomum sp. and Knema sp. It also consumes flowers of Wrightia sp., along with numerous invertebrates and some vertebrates.
