Red-throated Barbet

Overview

The Psilopogon mystacophanos is a species of barbet belonging to the family Megalaimidae. Classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN, this bird is currently threatened by habitat loss.

Identification

• Males are mainly green with a red crown, throat, and spot below the throat, along with a yellow crown patch.
• Males feature a black spot above each eye and some blue near the eyes and on the lower part of the throat.
• Females lack most of the male's facial coloration but are otherwise similar; juveniles resemble females.
• Adults measure 23 cm (9.1 in) in length and weigh 60–95 g (2.1–3.4 oz).

Habitat

The red-throated barbet is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Its natural habitats consist of subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical swamps.
