Red-billed Spurfowl

Overview

The red-billed spurfowl, also known as the red-billed francolin, is a species of bird in the family Phasianidae. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Males measure 38 cm in length and weigh 340–635 g, while females are slightly smaller at 33 cm and 340–549 g.
• The species features barred underparts and a conspicuous yellow eye-ring.
• Males and females exhibit sexual dimorphism in size, with males being larger.

Habitat

This bird is found in Southern Africa, including Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Specimens were originally collected near the Fish River in what is now Namibia.

Did you know?

The specific epithet adspersus is Latin for 'sprinkling'. The species was described in 1838 by George Robert Waterhouse based on specimens collected by James Edward Alexander.
