Overview

The black-throated laughingthrush (Pterorhinus chinensis) is a species of bird in the family Leiothrichidae. It is found across parts of Asia, including China and several Southeast Asian nations. The species is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, although it is thought to be experiencing population declines in its native range.

Habitat

This bird inhabits a variety of woodland habitats, preferring broadleaf evergreen forest, mixed deciduous forest, and secondary forest at elevations up to 1,525 m. Its range covers most of Indochina, including eastern Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and eastern Cambodia, as well as southern China and Hainan Island. In introduced locations such as Hong Kong, the species is known to inhabit urban parks.

Did you know?

The population in Hong Kong is believed to have descended from released cagebirds. Despite its natural range in forests, the species has been introduced to urban environments and other areas outside its native habitat, including Singapore and Taiwan, where it is increasing in population.
