Orange-bellied Fruit Dove

Overview

The orange-bellied fruit dove (Ptilinopus iozonus) is a small pigeon measuring 21 cm in length. It is currently classified as a species of Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Mainly green plumage with a large orange patch on the lower breast and belly.
• Features a small lilac shoulder patch and pale yellow undertail coverts.
• Displays a grey terminal band on the tail.

Habitat

Found in New Guinea, the Aru Islands, and western Papuan islands, where it inhabits lowland rainforest, secondary forest, and mangroves. The species has also been recorded on Boigu Island in Queensland, Australian territory.

Diet

This dove feeds on the fruit of forest trees, with a preference for figs.
