Black-naped Fruit Dove

Overview

The Ptilinopus melanospilus, also known as the black-headed fruit dove, is a medium-sized green fruit dove up to 24 cm long. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, being widespread and common throughout its large range.

Identification

• Males possess a pale grey head with a distinct black nape, a yellow throat, and golden yellow and pink undertail coverts.
• Females and young birds exhibit entirely green plumage.
• The species features a yellowish bill and iris.

Habitat

Found in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, this dove inhabits lowland and hill forests. In Indonesia, its distribution includes Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands, and Sulawesi.

Diet

The diet consists mainly of various fruits, figs, and berries.
