Palau Fruit Dove

Overview

The Palau fruit dove (Ptilinopus pelewensis) is a bird species in the family Columbidae that is endemic to the island nation of Palau, where it also serves as the national bird.

Identification

• Length ranges from 23 to 25 cm with a weight of approximately 93 g.
• Adults feature a grey head, neck and breast topped by a purple cap and a yellow line.
• An orange band crosses the lower breast and belly, contrasting with an olive-green back, wings and tail.
• Juveniles resemble adults but lack the purple cap, displaying yellow-lined green upperparts and a yellow belly.

Habitat

Endemic to Palau, this species is found in all habitats across the islands. Although the population declined significantly due to hunting before 1945, it has since rebounded under protection and is now considered common.

Despite a historical decline caused by hunting, the species has recovered sufficiently to be classified as Least Concern by the IUCN and is currently common throughout its range.
