Rose-crowned Fruit Dove

Overview

The rose-crowned fruit dove (Ptilinopus regina), also known as the pink-capped or Swainson's fruit dove, is a medium-sized bird native to parts of southern Indonesia and eastern and northern Australia. It is classified as a Least Concern species on the IUCN Red List due to its widespread distribution and common presence within its range.

Identification

• Approximately 22 cm long with a grey head and breast, an orange belly, and a whitish throat.
• Features a pinkish-red crown bordered by yellow, along with a yellow-orange iris.
• Possesses a greyish-green bill and feet, with both adult sexes appearing similar.

Habitat

Found in lowland rainforests and monsoon forests across northern and eastern Australia, as well as the Lesser Sunda and Maluku Islands of Indonesia. Its range extends from the Torres Strait islands and Cape York Peninsula in the north to New South Wales in the southeast of Australia.

Diet

The diet consists mainly of various fruits, palms, and vines.
