Stripe-throated Bulbul

Overview

The stripe-throated bulbul, also known as the streak-throated bulbul, is a species of songbird in the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is a common species classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Identification

• Grows to a length of about 20 cm (8 in).
• Predominantly dull brown plumage with bold yellow streaks on the forehead, ear coverts, throat, and upper breast.
• Leading edges of the wings and outer tail feathers are yellowish, with the lower breast and belly streaked in white.
• The song is a variable, loud, and clear sequence of throaty notes.

Habitat

Native to tropical south-eastern Asia, including peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. It inhabits tropical moist lowland and montane forests, as well as secondary forests, thickets, scrubland, clearings, and gardens. It is found at altitudes up to approximately 1,300 m (4,300 ft).

Diet

This omnivorous bird forages for berries and fruits, including banyans and Ficus triangularis. It supplements its diet with insects, which it catches on the wing or on the ground.
