Overview

The brown-breasted bulbul (Pycnonotus xanthorrhous) is a songbird in the family Pycnonotidae, first described by John Anderson in 1869. It is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

Found in south-eastern Asia, its range extends from central and southern China to Myanmar and northern Thailand. Two subspecies are recognised: P. x. xanthorrhous, which is found from south-western China and northern Myanmar to northern Indochina, and P. x. andersoni, which is found in central and southern China.

Diet

The bird consumes fruit, specifically including Camellia japonica.

Did you know?

The species was originally described as a separate species within the genus Ixos under the name P. x. andersoni by R. Swinhoe in 1870. It is also known by the alternate names Anderson's bulbul and yellow-vented bulbul.
