Santarem Parakeet

Overview

The Santarém parakeet, also known as Hellmayr's parakeet or the Santarém conure, is a species of parrot in the family Psittacidae. It is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Total length is approximately 22 cm.
• Mainly green plumage with a dark red belly, rump, and tail-tip, plus bluish remiges.
• Features a whitish or dull buff patch on the auriculars and dark maroon cheeks and ocular region.
• Possesses dark greyish legs, with some subspecies displaying a yellowish eye-ring.

Habitat

Restricted to Brazil and Bolivia, the species inhabits tropical humid lowland forest and adjacent areas. Its range covers the eastern and central sections of the Amazon basin south of the Amazon River, extending just onto the northern bank, as well as the Madeira River basin in southwest Brazil and northern Bolivia.

Diet

The bird feeds on fruits, seeds, and flowers. It is social and typically seen foraging in pairs or groups.
