The northern fantail (Rhipidura rufiventris) is a species of bird in the family Rhipiduridae. It was formally described in 1818 and is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

The species is found in New Guinea, Timor, and northern Australia, ranging from Broome in Western Australia to the Shire of Burdekin in Queensland. Its natural habitats consist of subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests.

Did you know?

The specific epithet rufiventris is Modern Latin meaning 'red-bellied', yet the original specimen was mistakenly believed by the describer to have been collected in Australia, whereas the type locality has since been designated as the island of Timor.
