Overview

The rufous vanga (Schetba rufa) is a monotypic bird species in the family Vangidae. It is endemic to Madagascar and is currently classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

This species inhabits subtropical or tropical dry forest and subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest. Its range is restricted to Madagascar, with two subspecies: S. r. rufa found in the north and east, and S. r. occidentalis in the west.

Did you know?

The bird was first described in 1760 by the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson, who based his account on a specimen collected in Madagascar. Although Brisson provided a Latin name, it did not conform to binomial nomenclature, leading Carl Linnaeus to coin the valid binomial Lanius rufus in 1766.
