Overview

The varzea schiffornis, also known as the Schiffornis major, is a bird species currently classified in the family Tityridae, though it was traditionally placed in the manakin family. It is also referred to as the greater schiffornis or varzea mourner.

Habitat

Found in most western regions of the Amazon Basin, as well as Amazonian Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and parts of Venezuela, this species mainly occurs in varzea environments.

Did you know?

Despite being historically grouped with the manakin family, evidence strongly suggests that the varzea schiffornis is better placed within the Tityridae family.
