Neblina Tapaculo

Overview

The Neblina Tapaculo (Scytalopus altirostris) is a small bird endemic to the Andes of northern Peru. It was formerly considered a subspecies of the Magellanic Tapaculo but was elevated to species status due to vocal differences.

Identification

• Length of 10 to 12 cm with a weight range of 17 to 22 g.
• Adult males feature grey upperparts with a brown wash on the neck, while females have more brownish upperparts.
• Brown lower back and rump marked with black bars, alongside tawny flanks and crissum with similar black barring.
• Song consists of a rapid series of descending, dry churring phrases described as 'djrr djrr djrr'.

Habitat

Found in the Eastern Cordillera of Peru's northern Andes, spanning roughly from southern Amazonas to central Huánuco Departments. It resides on the eastern slope at elevations between 2,900 and 3,700 m, inhabiting elfin forest and the edge between the forest and adjacent páramo grasslands in very wet, misty environments.

Diet

Little is known about the species' diet and foraging phenology, though it is assumed to be insectivorous.

Did you know?

The species' name 'neblina' is Spanish for mist, reflecting the characteristic misty conditions of its habitat. A juvenile was noted in July, providing the only available information on its breeding biology.
