Overview

The mouse-coloured tapaculo, also known as the Serra do Mar tapaculo, is a species of bird in the family Rhinocryptidae. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

This species is endemic to humid highland forests in southeastern Brazil. Its range extends from south-western Espírito Santo to north-eastern Rio Grande do Sul, with most of its population found in the Serra do Mar and further inland in Paraná and Santa Catarina.

The correct scientific name for this species has been subject to intense controversy, with the name Scytalopus speluncae originally referring to a relatively pale population before being reassigned to the darker Serra do Mar population, or vice versa, depending on the taxonomic authority. Phylogenetic evidence suggests that further undescribed taxa of the genus Scytalopus still remain in eastern Brazil.
