Mangrove Warbler

Overview

The mangrove warbler, or mangrove yellow warbler (Setophaga petechia), is a New World warbler species. It is a small, bright yellow bird that was formerly considered conspecific with the migratory American yellow warbler.

Identification

• A small bird approximately 13 cm (5.1 in) in length.
• Males feature a rufous hood, while females and immature birds have greenish-yellow uppersides and duller yellow underparts.
• Remiges and rectrices are blackish olive with yellow edges, sometimes forming an indistinct wing-band.
• Eyes and a short, thin beak are dark, with feet that are lighter or darker olive-buff.

Habitat

This species is found in mangroves along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the tropical Americas. Its range also extends to the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands.
