Overview

The black-eared hemispingus (Sphenopsis melanotis) is a species of bird in the family Thraupidae. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Habitat

This bird inhabits humid highland forest in the Andes of western Venezuela through to western Bolivia. Its range excludes the west Andean slopes of southwestern Colombia and northwestern Ecuador, where the western hemispingus is found, as well as the west Andean slopes of southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru, home to the Piura hemispingus.

Did you know?

Two distinctive subspecies of the black-eared hemispingus are sometimes considered as separate species: the western hemispingus and the Piura hemispingus.
