Overview

The blue-capped tanager (Sporathraupis cyanocephala) is a species of bird in the family Thraupidae. It is the only species currently recognised in the genus Sporathraupis, having been moved there from Thraupis following a 2014 molecular phylogenetic study.

Habitat

The species inhabits subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, as well as heavily degraded former forest. Its range includes Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela.

Did you know?

The genus name Sporathraupis is a composite of the Ancient Greek word for 'seed' and 'thraupis', the latter being a historical term for an unknown small bird.
