Overview

The chestnut-bellied seed finch (Sporophila angolensis) is a species of bird in the family Thraupidae, currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It was formerly considered part of a larger complex with the thick-billed seed finch under the name lesser seed-finch.

Habitat

Found widely in shrubby and grassy areas across tropical and subtropical South America. Its range includes Trinidad, Tobago, eastern Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, and north and west Amazonia, extending to north Bolivia, eastern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeast Argentina. It is found east of the Andes, having been replaced in western regions by the closely related thick-billed seed finch.

Did you know?

The species was named 'Angolensis' because the original illustration used by Linnaeus was mistakenly believed to depict a bird from Angola, although the species does not actually occur there and its true type locality is eastern Brazil.
