The rusty-collared seedeater is a species of bird classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It was originally described by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon in 1775 and is now placed in the genus Sporophila.

Habitat

Found across Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, this species inhabits subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, swamps, and heavily degraded former forest.

The French polymath Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, mistakenly believed that his original specimen had come from Angola, whereas the type location was later designated as Rio de Janeiro in Brazil by Carl Eduard Hellmayr in 1904.
