Overview

The black-headed tanager (Stilpnia cyanoptera) is a species of bird within the family Thraupidae that is currently classified as Near Threatened. The black-hooded tanager (Stilpnia whitelyi) was formerly regarded as a conspecific or subspecies of the black-headed tanager.

Habitat

This species is native to the Andes of northeastern Colombia and the Venezuelan Coastal Range. It inhabits subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, high-altitude shrubland, and heavily degraded former forests.

The species' scientific name derives from the Ancient Greek word kuanopteros, which translates to 'blue-winged' or 'dark-winged'. It was originally illustrated by William Swainson in 1834 under the binomial name Aglaia cyanoptera.
