White-shouldered Starling

Overview

The white-shouldered starling (Sturnia sinensis) is a species of bird in the starling family Sturnidae that breeds in southern China and northern Vietnam. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Blue eyes and a grey bill.
• A distinct white patch on the shoulder.
• Adult males have a light brown head and breast with a white belly.
• Adult females are darker brown on the back and belly.

Habitat

This species breeds in southern China and northern Vietnam, but winters in Southeast Asia. Its range extends across numerous Asian countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, India, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.
