Rufous-winged Tanager

Overview

The rufous-winged tanager (Tangara lavinia) is a species of bird in the family Thraupidae. It is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• T. l. cara exhibits blue on the belly, but not on the throat or breast.
• T. l. dalmasi has a small spot of blue on the chin that does not extend to the breast.
• The nominate subspecies, T. l. lavinia, features a line of blue running down the centre of the throat to the breast.

Habitat

This species is found in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Its natural habitats consist of subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and heavily degraded former forest.

Diet

The rufous-winged tanager feeds on insects and fruit.
