Green-headed Tanager

Overview

The green-headed tanager (Tangara seledon) is a brightly colored bird found in the Atlantic forest of south-eastern Brazil, far eastern Paraguay, and far north-eastern Argentina. As a member of the genus Tangara, it is a small species classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Average size of 13.5 centimeters (5.3 in) with a mass of 18g (0.6 oz).
• Features a greenish or bluish head, black back, and a contrastingly orange or red rump.
• Females and juveniles possess similar but duller coloration.
• Its blue-green plumage provides effective camouflage amongst foliage, making it inconspicuous despite its flashy appearance.

Habitat

This species inhabits humid forests but is also common in orchards and parks. It moves through the canopy, where its coloration allows it to blend well with the surrounding leaves. Its range includes the Atlantic forest in south-eastern Brazil, far eastern Paraguay, and the Misiones region of far north-eastern Argentina.
