Azure-rumped Parrot

Overview

The azure-rumped parrot is a large bird endemic to Indonesia that inhabits forests in Sulawesi and the Sangir Islands. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, though it faces threats from habitat loss and the pet trade.

Identification

• Medium-sized at 32 cm, primarily green with a distinctive blue rump and blue wing bends.
• Features a yellow iris, differentiating it from the blue-backed parrot which has a red iris.
• Sexually dimorphic with a red beak in males and a pale yellow or horn-coloured beak in females.

Habitat

Found in forests across Sulawesi and the Sangir Islands, including the nearby island of Karakelong. It is endemic to these specific regions within Indonesia.

Did you know?

Flocks are often active at night. It was previously considered conspecific with the blue-backed parrot until 2022 when phylogenetic evidence led to the recognition of a separate subspecies.
