Puna Tinamou

Overview

The puna tinamou, also known as Pentland's tinamou, is a member of the tinamou family native to the Andes Mountains in South America. This species is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List with an occurrence range of 590,000 km².

Identification

• Approximately 41 cm in length.
• Upper parts brown spotted with white; head white with black streaks.
• Breast is blue-grey and belly is rufous.

Habitat

This bird inhabits high-altitude grassland and, to a lesser extent, brushland at altitudes of 4,000 to 4,700 m in subtropical and tropical regions. Its range covers Peru, northern Bolivia, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina.

The scientific binomial name Tinamotis pentlandii commemorates Irish natural scientist Joseph Barclay Pentland (1797–1873), who was honoured by Nicholas Aylward Vigors in 1837.
