White-throated Tinamou

Overview

The white-throated tinamou (Tinamus guttatus) is a species of bird native to the Amazon rainforest. It is the smallest member of the genus Tinamus, which comprises some of the larger tinamous.

Identification

• Chestnut-brown upperparts with blackish streaking on the lower back and small yellowish-white spots.
• Paler underparts with wider, dark barring on the flanks.
• Grey head and neck featuring a white throat, with a brown eye and brown bill.
• Measures between 32 and 36 cm in length.

Habitat

This species inhabits sub-tropical and tropical lowland forests at elevations of 500 m or lower. Its range extends across Brazil, northern Bolivia, southeastern Colombia, northeastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and southern Venezuela.

Diet

It forages for fruit off the ground or from low-lying bushes, and also consumes invertebrates, flower buds, tender leaves, seeds, and roots.

The male incubates eggs that may have come from as many as four different females. Its eggs are also prized possessions among some collectors.
