Sombre Kingfisher

Overview

The sombre kingfisher (Todiramphus funebris) is a relatively large bird species endemic to the island of Halmahera in North Maluku, Indonesia. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, though it faces threats from habitat loss.

Identification

• Relatively large kingfisher measuring up to 28 cm (11 in) with piebald colouring.
• White belly and collar contrast with olive to black upper parts.
• Possesses a dark beak.
• Calls include a slow 'ki-ki-ki' and series of three loud wails.

Habitat

Inhabits primary forest, swamp-forest, mature secondary woodland, and mangroves in Halmahera, frequently near clearings. It may also visit cultivated areas such as plantations.
