Abyssinian Thrush

Overview

The Abyssinian thrush (Turdus abyssinicus), also known as the African mountain thrush or northern olive thrush, is a passerine bird in the family Turdidae native to the eastern Afromontane. The species was split from the olive thrush based on genetic differences, and its current population is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Identification

• Length of approximately 22 cm (8.7 in).
• Generally darker than the African thrush and Kurrichane thrush, with a distinct orange bill rather than yellow.
• Lacks malar stripes.
• Plumage tends to become darker at higher altitudes.

Habitat

Native to the eastern Afromontane, this species occurs in the highlands of eastern Africa ranging from South Sudan south to northern Mozambique. It inhabits forests, woodlands, exotic plantations, parks, and gardens.
