Karoo Thrush

Overview

The Karoo thrush (Turdus smithi), also known as Smith's thrush, is a medium-sized member of the thrush family in Africa. It is increasingly treated as a separate species rather than a subspecies of the olive thrush, though hybridisation between the two is known to occur.

Identification

• Medium-sized bird with a length of approximately 24 cm.
• Distinguished by a longer, entirely yellow bill.
• Possesses longer wings and greyer flanks compared to the olive thrush.

Habitat

Found in South Africa, specifically in Little Namaqualand, the Karoo, Northern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and parts of the North West Province.
