Blue-headed Wood Dove

Overview

The blue-headed wood dove (Turtur brehmeri), also known as the blue-headed dove, is a medium-sized rufous brown bird. It is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Identification

• Medium-sized dove, up to 25 cm long.
• Rufous brown plumage with a bluish-grey head and iridescent green patches on the wings.
• Reddish bill, dark brown iris, and dark red feet.
• Young birds appear duller in colour than adults.

Habitat

This species is widespread across the African tropical rainforest. It is locally common throughout its large range and typically nests in trees using twigs, leaves, and other vegetation.

Diet

The diet consists mainly of seeds, fallen fruits, insects, and small animals taken from feeding grounds. The female usually lays one to two eggs.
