Van Dam's Vanga

Overview

Van Dam's Vanga (Xenopirostris damii) is a species of bird in the family Vangidae that is endemic to Madagascar. It is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with a decreasing population trend estimated between 1,500 and 7,000 individuals.

Identification

• Males possess a black hood, whereas females have only a black cap.

Habitat

This species inhabits subtropical or tropical dry forests and is found in a very small range isolated to just two confirmed sites, one of which is Ankarafantsika National Park. Its habitat is currently under increasing pressure from human encroachment and fire.
