Overview

The grey-capped pygmy woodpecker (Yungipicus canicapillus) is an Asian bird species within the woodpecker family, Picidae. It has one recognized subspecies, Y. c. doerriesi, found primarily in Manchuria, eastern Siberia, and Korea, though some authorities still classify the species under the genera Dendrocopos or Picoides.

Identification

• A small, dark woodpecker featuring a dark grey crown and a red nape in males.
• Barred black and white upperparts with unbarred central tail feathers.
• Dark buff underparts with prominent dark streaking.
• Distinctive face pattern consisting of strong black eyestripes and thin dark malar stripes that contrast sharply with broad white supercilia and cheeks.

Habitat

The species ranges from the Himalayas and Manchuria to Southeast Asia. It inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical mangrove forests, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
